Next Generation SFPs with 400G Fiber Transceiver Solution : QSFP-DD Vs OSFP

Today I am going to talk about the next generation SFP's which will have the capability to provide the 400G transceiver. So now Service providers are approaching to have the higher capabilities of SFP. As of now QSFP28 is one which has higher capability in the market.

Earlier I talked about the SFP, SFP+, QSFP, QSFP+, XFP and CFP modules and connector which is using now a days in many of the deployments. Now Cisco is working with some of the companies for QSFP-DD as a industry standard with 400G fiber transceiver. While Google is working for OSFP as a industry standard with same capability of 400G.

QSFP-DD is a QSFP28 with double density. So it means QSFP-DD is a actually a QSFP56 and is a double capacity then QSFP28 which will give you the 400G fiber transceiver solution. Similarly OSFP is another standard which has the capacity of 400G fiber transceiver solution.

QSFP-DD will support eight lanes instead of four lanes for the QSFP28 which double the density. Each of the eight lanes will operate a data rate up to 50Gb/s providing a 400Gb/s data speed and increasing the capacity of the QSFP28 by four. The 400G QSFP-DD published that the size of the optical transceivers enables to put 36 ports in one switch slot, accumulating 14.4 Tbps in one slot.

The QSFP-DD will support:
  • 3m of passive copper cables
  • 100m over parallel multimode fiber
  • 500m over parallel single mode fiber
  • 2 km and 10km over duplex single mode fiber
  • WDM and Coherent designs
  • Backward compatible with all QSFP based transceivers from 40G to 200G

On the other hand, OSFP stands for Octal Small Form factor Pluggable. As the QSFP-DD, the OSFP has 8 lanes supporting 50G each. The OSFP is a new pluggable form factor, which is slightly wider and deeper than the QSFP family. Its size won’t enable the backward compatibility with the QSFP and QSFP28

OSFP will support:-
  • OSFP copper cables 400G-CR8 Black N/A
  • OSFP AOC Cables 400G-AOC Grey 422U
  • OSFP 850nm solutions 400G-SR8,SR4 Beige 475U
  • OSFP 1310nm solutions for up to 500m 400G DR4 Yellow 107U
  • OSFP 1310nm solutions for up to 2km 400G FR4, FR8 Green 354C
  • OSFP 1310nm solutions for up to 10km 400G LR8 Blue 300U
  • OSFP 1310nm solutions for up to 40km 400G ER8 Red 1797U

Below is the difference between these two models as
