Network Virtualization System (nV Edge) on Cisco ASR 9k

Today I am going to talk about Network Virtualization System on Cisco ASR 9k series router or so called as nV Edge system. ASR 9000 routers are the foundation of next generation edge and carrier Ethernet networks and provide high platform density, low power intake and network virtualization capabilities.

All these abilities help Service Providers or Enterprises to better monetize new cost-effective services, enhance network efficiency, advance productivity, decrease operating difficulty and boost customer experiences.

Cisco ASR 9000 delivers the establishment for Evolved Programmable Network (EPN) for business, customer, mobile and cloud-based amenities as well as mobile services. High-scale edge routing and Ethernet switching support address service requirements from the persistent growth in IP-centric services such as video and mobile data.

Overview of Cisco ASR 9000 nV Edge Architecture
A Cisco ASR 9000 Series nV Edge comprises of two Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router chassis that are joined to form a single routing entity. We can control two Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router platforms as a single virtual Cisco ASR 9000 Series system. Did you heard this concept the same way you guys are doing in the Cisco catalyst switch as VSS. Creating one control plane for both the routers which gives you more power as an better redundancy.

Essentially, they can logically link two physical chassis with a collective control plane, as if the chassis were two route switch processors (RSPs) within a single chassis.

Benefits of Cisco ASR 9000 Series nV Edge System
  • Cisco ASR 9000 Series nV Edge System performs as a single switch or router to the neighboring devices.
  • You can logically link two physical chassis with a shared control plane, as if the chassis were two route switch processors (RSPs) within a single chassis. As an outcome, we can double the bandwidth capacity of single nodes and abolish the need for complicated protocol-based high-availability systems.
  • We can accomplish failover times of less than 50 milliseconds for even the most challenging services and scalability needs.
  • Cisco nV technology permits us to extend Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router system abilities beyond the physical chassis with remote virtual line cards. These small form-factor (SFF) Cisco ASR 9000v cards can collective hundreds of Gigabit Ethernet connections at the access and aggregation layers.
  • The nV Edge system permits perfect add-on new chassis. There would be no interruption in traffic or control session flap when a chassis is added to the system.
